Analysts said the chancellor had failed to come up with a strong enough plan to tackle Britain#039;s record black hole in its public finances and worries intensified today over the government#039;s AAA lender status./ppBond prices slid, with March gilt future contracts down more than a full point. The spread for UK bonds against eurozone bonds jumped to its widest in a year. The concerns about the UK#039;s credit rating follow a cut to Spain#039;s outlook by ratings agency Standard and Poor#039;s yesterday and a downgrade to Greece#039;s debt by Fitch./ppImmediately following Darling#039;s pre-budget speech, bookmaker Paddy Power cut the odds on Britain maintaining its AAA credit rating from 3/1 to just 6/4.In an analysis, published after the PBR, Barclays Capital warned of a long, hard winter for the gilt market. Simon Hayes and Moyeen Islam said: For the gilt market, the PBR will come to be seen as the first chapter of the story that will unfold over the next year: that of the fiscal credibility of the Treasury./ppThe issuance profile remains heavy, and there is little to suggest that the necessary fiscal consolidation is in place./p
